Running a Lunch-Break Quiz at Work
A quiz is one of the easiest ways to make a lunch break social. It needs a little planning so it fits the time and includes everyone.
Borrow the pub quiz format
The pub quiz is a familiar format: teams answer rounds of questions on different topics and a host keeps score. At work, a shorter version with two or three rounds fits comfortably into a lunch break.
Planning checklist
- Choose a time when most people can join, and keep it to the length of the break.
- Make teams mixed across departments so it is not the same group every time.
- Prepare answer sheets or a simple online form.
- Decide the tie-break question in advance.
Keep it inclusive
- Avoid rounds that depend on in-jokes or knowledge only one team has.
- Include a picture or music round for people who do not enjoy general knowledge.
- Offer a remote option for colleagues who are not in the office.
Prizes
Small, symbolic prizes work best: choosing next week's theme, or a rotating trophy. Avoid anything that involves betting money, which changes the mood and may break workplace rules.
