Building a Sports Trivia Round
Sport questions are popular, but they go stale fast. A good round mixes timeless facts with the current season.
Two kinds of sport question
- Evergreen. Rules, equipment and long-established facts that rarely change.
- Current. This season's results and storylines, which reward people who follow the sport but need checking right before the quiz.
Using baseball as an example
Baseball suits trivia because it has clear rules and a lot of history. Nippon Professional Baseball is the top professional league in Japan, and it is split into the Central League and the Pacific League, with the season ending in the Japan Series between teams from the two. A question about how that structure works stays valid for years; a question about who is leading the table this week may be wrong by Friday.
Research the current season
For current questions, use the league's own site or a guide that is updated through the season, and note the date you checked. If your office has fans in Taiwan who follow Japanese baseball, this Traditional Chinese guide to how Japanese professional baseball is broadcast in Taiwan and when the postseason runs (日職直播怎麼看) is a handy starting point for both question ideas and an after-quiz watch.
Make it fair for non-fans
- Use multiple choice for the hardest questions.
- Add a "guess the sport" picture question that anyone can attempt.
- Limit sport to one round, so it does not decide the whole quiz.
